Big Apple Triple Kicks Off with Mike Lee

Trainer Carlos Martin is hoping it will start in the $100,000-added Mike Lee Stakes on June 21 at Belmont Park.

Tin Cup Chalice Euthanized After Injury

Tin Cup Chalice, the first horse to sweep the Big Apple Triple for 3-year-olds bred in New York, and another horse were both euthanized Friday, April 17, following a training accident at Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack in western New York.

Kane Hekili Captures Japan Cup Dirt

Kane Hekili beat back the late charges of favored Vermilion and Meisho Tokon to win the $3 million Japan Cup Dirt (Jpn-I) by a head in the first running of the event at Hanshin Racecourse Dec. 7. American hopes Frost Giant and Tin Cup Chalice finished 12th and 13th, respectively.

Tin Cup Chalice Beats Pyro in Indy Derby

Remarkable gelding Tin Cup Chalice earned his first victory outside of New York Oct. 4 at Hoosier Park, as he sprinted to an early lead and held off Pyro and Acai in deep stretch to win the $514,000 Indiana Derby (gr. II) by a length.

Pyro Draws Outside for Indiana Derby

While unable to deliver in his last two tries as the favorite, Pyro is sure to once again be the horse to beat when he goes to the post in the $500,000 Indiana Derby (gr. II) at Hoosier Park Oct. 4.

Tin Cup Chalice, owned, bred, and trained by Michael Lecesse, became the first horse to sweep the OTB's Big Apple Triple on Aug. 20 at Saratoga, when he held off an upset bid by That'srightofficer to win the 31st running of the $150,000, nine-furlong Albany Stakes for 3-year-old New York-breds by a head.
