Memorial Service Precedes Reopening of Belmont Park

Racing resumed at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., Wednesday for the first time since the deadly terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 that included the downing of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in nearby Manhattan after two hijacked planes rammed into them. A memorial service was conducted in the winner's circle at Belmont prior to Wednesday's 1 p.m. first post.

Meadowlands Complex Used for Staging Area for Rescue Efforts

On Tuesday, the Meadowlands Sports Complex, site of the Meadowlands Racetrack, Giants Stadium and Continental Airlines Arena, was converted into a staging area for rescue efforts for victims of the World Trade Center terrorist attack in nearby Manhattan.

Racing Industry Reacts to 'Unprecedented Tragedy'

Thoroughbred racing and simulcasting at major locations in the United States shut down Tuesday due to the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. Many also planned to close Wednesday. The commissioner of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association said it could take a while "to sort out the implications for the country, as well as our business."
