Wildcat Heir Off to Fast Start as a Stallion

Wildcat Heir, who was fast enough to win the six-furlong Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash Stakes (gr. I) in 2004, is getting off to a fast start as a stallion in 2009. As of July 17, there were already 11 winners in the first crop sired by the 9-year-old Forest Wildcat horse, which stands at Brent and Crystal Fernung's Journeyman Stud near Ocala, Fla.

With the prices for sale yearlings falling and world economic problems rising, many breeders are hoping to save money on stud fees in 2009. Stallion managers in Central Kentucky are expected to begin announcing the amounts they will charge soon, and several of them told The Blood-Horse they would be more likely to keep their fees the same than go down. They also plan to raise the fees for some stallions whose progeny have been performing well on the racetrack.

Taylor Made Sales Agency will host its annual RNA sale and party at its Nicholasville, Ky., facility Sept. 17 from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. (EDT). Horses that were bought back during the early sessions of the Keeneland September yearling sale will be offered during the event.

Touched by the recent stories of the late Alex Scott and her Alex's Lemonade Stand, Ernie Paragallo of North Mass, New York and a part owner of the Kentucky-based stallion Unbridled's Song is contributing $62,500 to Alex's Lemonade Stand and $62,500 to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation based in New Canaan, Connecticut.

The Northern Afleet syndicate and its manager Taylor Made/WinStar venture has agreed to donate the proceeds of a live auction of a 2006 Northern Afleet no guarantee season to benefit "Alex's Lemonade Stand." Grade I winner Miss Linda has been retired from racing and will be bred to Unbridled's Song. Miss Linda retires with a career record of 21-8-2-6. She earned $870,000.
