Any fears that an indifferent start would deter pinhookers as Tattersalls' December Foal Sale came to life Thursday were soon banished after a day of strong trade that all but matched the record-breaking 2003 figures.

The European record for a breeze-up sale was smashed during the opening session Wednesday of the Tattersalls breeze-up auction when Japanese owner Fusao Sekiguchi purchased a son of Fusaichi Pegasus, the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner that he raced, for $895,500.

A record-breaking largest ever Tattersalls December Foal Sale concluded in Newmarket last night with a 21,157,000 guineas turnover for 738 sold, up 23% on the amount yielded by 585 sold a year ago.

But the 7,944 guineas average was still up by 12% over last year's record and the 5,000 guineas median was up 25%. The session aggregate of 1,421,900 guineas for an expanded catalogue was virtually double the 2002 figure.
