Chapa to Serve Five-Year Suspension

Jockey Roman Chapa recently began serving a five-year suspension issued by the New Mexico Racing Commission after he was found to be in possession of an electrical device. Chapa had appealed the ruling to district court, which on Sept. 11 upheld the commission, according to the organization's manager, Rosemary Leeder.

Jockey Gomez Bailed out of Jail

Jockey Garrett Gomez, who was arrested in Riverside County, Calif., on July 3 for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of a controlled substance, as well as for a failure to appear violation from a previous arrest in Los Angeles County, was released from custody early Friday morning after posting $20,000 bail.

Texas Trainer Dies in Traffic Accident

Texas-based trainer Ramon Flores died Tuesday morning in car accident near Schulenberg, Texas. Flores and groom Rafael Hernandez were hauling three horses to Sunland Park in New Mexico when the trainer lost control of their van after hitting an icy patch on the road. Hernandez and the three horses escaped without injury.
