Before the running of last year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), Keeneland Race Course was overrun with trainers whose potential contenders were squeezing in final works prior to shipping up to Churchill Downs. This year, Todd Pletcher cut a lonely figure along the rail at the Lexington oval as he sent Behindatthebar to gallop and then watched Monba and Cowboy Cal complete their final preparations April 26.

Grade I winner Octave, whose $4 million price was the second-highest at the recent Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale, has been retired to become a broodmare for Sheikh Mohammed's Darley in Central Kentucky.

Keyed Entry to Point for Kentucky Derby

Keyed Entry, who finished third in the Wood Memorial (gr. I), will ship to Churchill Downs Monday, and if he trains to the satisfaction of trainer Todd Pletcher, will be pointed for the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).

Pletcher Sends Out

Todd Pletcher, whose bench is stronger than most other trainers' first string, sends out the first team on Saturday, when he'll saddle Bluegrass Cat in the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) and Keyed Entry in the Gotham Stakes (gr. III).

Ashado, who missed the Louisville Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) on Kentucky Derby day because her trainer was not satisfied with her weight assignment, may run this Friday carrying that same 123 pounds.

In a good betting race, the public was right in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), with favored Ashado winning the 130th running of the top race for 3-year-old fillies Friday at Churchill Downs.
