Robbins Tops Del Mar Meet Officials

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will conduct its 70th race meeting beginning July 22 led by a veteran team of racing officials. Heading up the effort will by DMTC's vice president for racing, Tom Robbins, who also serves as the track's director of racing and racing secretary. This will be his 29th summer in the seaside racing office.

Grade II Winner Soto Retired

Grade II winner Soto, who sustained an injury while second to Ten Most Wanted in last year's Super Derby (gr. II), has been retired from racing.

Super Derby Next for Soto

Trainer Michael Dickinson reports that Soto, winner of $600,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. III) in his last start on Aug. 9, will make his next start in the $500,000 Super Derby (gr. II) at Louisiana Downs. The 24th running of the nine-furlong Super Derby will be on Sept. 20.

Undefeated Soto, who returned from a 7 1/2-month layoff to beat allowance foes in his sophomore debut July 19 at Philadelphia Park, has been installed as the slight 3-1 favorite in a competitive field of 3-year-olds set for the $600,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. III) at Mountaineer Park.

Dynever Joins Growing West Virginia Derby Field

Trainer Christophe Clement confirmed that Dynever, winner of the Aventura Stakes at Gulfstream Park in April and the Lone Star Derby (gr. III) at Lone Star Park in May, will run in the $600,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. III) at Mountaineer Park Saturday.

West Virginia Derby Nominations Close

The Aug. 9 West Virginia Derby (gr. III) at Mountaineer Park has attracted a list of 69 nominations, including 13 graded stakes winners from the United States and Canada. Nominations for the 1 1/8-mile race closed July 26.
