Thursday, April 11, 2002Sunday Break, winner of his last three starts, worked a sharp six furlongs in 1:15 3/5 at Aqueduct Monday, in preparation for Saturday's $750,000 Wood Memorial, while Saarland breezed a half in :48 at Belmont.
Monday, April 08, 2002Harlan's Holiday, winner of the Florida Derby, and Sunday Break, winner of his last three starts, worked Wednesday for their respective engagements in the April 13 Blue Grass Stakes and Wood Memorial.
Wednesday, April 03, 2002There were no big 3-year-old stakes this weekend, and the void proved too difficult for us to cope with. We need our Derby fix. So, our mind started racing – how do we put this unwanted respite to good use? Turn to the Derby gods.

Sunday, March 17, 2002Following his Florida Derby (gr. I) victory, Harlan's Holiday is now favored in pool two of the Kentucky Derby future wager offered by Churchill Downs.
Saturday, March 16, 2002Bettors at Aqueduct on Sunday will basically be clueless when it comes to wagering on the one-mile Gotham Stakes. The two overwhelming favorites in the field of seven, Saarland and Mayakovsky, not only will be making their first start of the year, they have absolutely nothing in common.
Friday, March 15, 2002Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier's Johannesburg, the 2-year-old champion of 2001, emerged as the favorite after the first day of Pool 2 of Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager.
Friday, March 15, 2002Marylou Whitney Stable's Governor Hickel worked five furlongs at Gulfstream Park Saturday in preparation for the $150,000 Swale Stakes (gr. III) on the Florida Derby (gr. Saturday, March 02, 2002The $200,000 Gotham Stakes, to be run Sunday March 17, could draw a talented group of 3-year-olds from different parts of the country, including two big-name colts from last year who will be making their 3-year-old debut. Friday, February 22, 2002A record $577,889 was wagered into pool one of the pari-mutuel Kentucky Derby future wager offered this weekend, with the mutuel field emerging as the first-round favorite for the fourth straight year.
Sunday, February 17, 2002Reflecting the lack of a strong favorite for this year's Kentucky Derby, bettors have made the mutuel field a prohibitive favorite in the first day of wagering in Pool One of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.
Friday, February 15, 2002The blurry Kentucky Derby picture should begin clearing up Saturday, as a number of Triple Crown hopefuls meet to determine who makes that all-important leap forward. The grade I Fountain of Youth Stakes, which drew a field of eight, is split right down the middle, with four stakes winners facing off against four up-and-coming stars. And in supporting allowance races, two promising colts lock horns in a prep for the Florida Derby, and a former Coolmore colt makes his U.S. debut.
Thursday, February 14, 2002Harlan's Holiday turned in another sharp work for Saturday's grade I Fountain of Youth Stakes, drilling a half in :47 1/5 Wednesday with jockey Tony D'Amico aboard. Wednesday, January 23, 2002Two years ago, Harold Rose won the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. Wednesday, January 02, 2002The one trainer who seems to be establishing his niche in this year's Derby picture is Shug McGaughey. With Saarland, Maybry's Boy, and D'Coach, it's as if McGaughey is standing at the quarter pole with a slingshot and launching some speeding projectiles down the Aqueduct stretch.
Monday, December 10, 2001New York has seen one of the mildest autumns on record, with temperatures often swelling into the 60s and even 70s. How mild was it on Nov. 24? It was so mild that the strongest wind was provided by Michael Tabor's Left Bank, who blew away his opponents to win the $350,000 Cigar Mile (gr. I) in a spectacular 1:33.35. On a day when horses basically were plodding home in slow times, Left Bank flew home as if caught up in some sudden squall.
Wednesday, November 28, 2001Next-to-last three furlongs from the wire, Cynthia Phipps' homebred Saarland rallied through the stretch to earn a narrow win over Nokoma in the $200,000 Remsen Stakes (gr. II) at Aqueduct Saturday.
Saturday, November 24, 2001A baker's dozen were pre-entered for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), but it will be an upside-down cake if anyone other than Officer enters the winner's circle following the 8 1/2 furlong match.
