Ellis Meet Mixed, With Attendance Up and Wagering Down

Ellis Park concluded its 41-day race meet with increased attendance and slightly lower total wagering. The totals for the meet, which ended with a Labor Day program on Sept. 2, shohwed a 3.1% increase in on-track attendance and a 2.1% decline in on-track betting. Overall wagering declined 3.6%, when compared to the 2001 meet.

Bonapaw Sets Stakes Record in Dubai Prep

In his final race before competing in the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-I) next month, Bonapaw carried 125 pounds to the winner's circle while setting a stakes record time in the $100,000 Taylor's Special Handicap at Fair Grounds Sunday.

Bonapaw to Prep Sunday for Dubai Golden Shaheen

Bonapaw has been invited to participate in the $2-million Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-I) on the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) undercard. The Golden Shaheen will be run two races prior to the World Cup on March 23 on a straight six-furlong course at Nad Al Sheba.

De Bertie Heads Friday's Escena Stakes

De Bertie, a two-time stakes winner over the Gulfstream Park strip last year, heads a field of 13 fillies and mares in Friday's $65,000 Escena Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. If all 13 go, the race will have a gross value of $75,400, with $45,240 to the winner.

Top Sprint Filly Swept Away is Retired

Richard, Bertram, and Elaine Klein's Swept Away, a winner of nine of 16 starts for earnings of $550,500, was retired June 26 because of an injury to her left front sesamoid. In her last race, the grade II Genuine Risk Handicap at Belmont Park May 12, Swept Away finished an uncharacteristic eighth.
