The current meet at Portland Meadows in Oregon will end Feb. 10--36 days before its scheduled conclusion--in light of an ongoing problem with surface-water removal at the racetrack.

The Racing Channel, an online handicapping and odds service with links to Philadelphia Park's Phonebet service, was granted approval to operate a "multi-jurisdictional simulcasting and interactive wagering totalizator hub" in Oregon. The approval includes an international marketing service that would take wagers from the United Kingdom through legal bookmakers.

Environmentalists Intend to Sue Portland Meadows

Environmentalists notified Portland Meadows on Nov. 27 that they intend to sue the racetrack for illegally discharging manure into the Columbia Slough. An official with Magna Entertainment, which owns the Oregon racetrack's operating rights, called the lawsuit unfair and said the company has been working closely with the Environmental Protection Agency since assuming control in May.

AmericaTab Adds Harness Track to Stable

AmericaTab, an online wagering company owned by two Ohio racetracks -- Beulah Park and River Downs -- has added Northfield Park to its stable. The northern Ohio harness track has been approved as an equity partner in AmericaTab by the Oregon Racing Commission.

The Oregon Racing Commission on Friday approved an application by the TV Games Network for to operate a wagering hub. Currently, TVG wagers run through a hub operated by NTRA Services, a subsidiary of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and marketing partner of TVG.

NTRA Services Hub Handle Tops $6 Million

The NTRA Services wagering hub in Oregon handled $6,133,521 for the first quarter of 2001, by far the highest figure for a three-period since the first report was submitted early last year. The handle, generated by bettors in Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, and Oregon, is almost twice as large as the handle recorded for the first three months of 2000.

Portland Meadows to Close After Three Years

Tom Moyer, who bought the operating rights to Portland Meadows last month, will keep the track open up to three years then develop the property. The racetrack will be managed in the meantime by Magna Entertainment, which may step in and preserve live racing in the Portland area with a new or existing track.

The NTRA Services wagering hub in Oregon registered a 35% increase in handle in the third quarter of 2000 compared with the year-earlier period. According to Oregon Racing Commission figures, the betting hub, operated on behalf of the TV Games Network, handled $4,283,997 in the third quarter of 2000, up 35% from the hub's first three months of operation in 1999.
