Loseth Wins Avelino Gomez Award

Veteran Hastings Park jockey Chris Loseth has been named the recipient of the 2001 Avelino Gomez Memorial Award. The award, sponsored by the Ontario Jockey Club, is given annually to a Canadian-born, Canadian-raised, or regular rider in the country for more than five years who has made significant contributions to the sport.

Magna Eyeing Four U.S. Tracks, Another in Ontario

Magna Entertainment chairman Frank Stronach told shareholders May 11 that he plans to buy four more racetracks in the United States. He said he hopes the racing conglomerate will control 35% of the U.S. handle on Thoroughbred races within two years. Stronach is also considering breaking into the Ontario racing market.

Horse Race Wagering Soars in Ontario

The Ontario Jockey Club reported today that wagering continued its strong upward trend in 2000. A record $1,221,684,460 in wagers was handled by the company, up 11.6% from $1,094,511,000 in 1999. Total wagering at the two OJC tracks, Woodbine and Mohawk, at 27 off-track wagering sites in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and by telephone account bettors, totalled $854,866,100, an increase of 7.4% over the $795.8 million recorded in 1999.
