Stable Market: Non-Select Juvenile Sales in Review

Non-select sales of 2-year-olds in training experienced declines in gross revenue, average price, and median price in 2002. Usually such negative trends are signs of poor economic health. But the losses tended to be minor, and were offset, in part, by a significant decrease in the buy-back rate. In the final analysis, the market for modest juvenile stock this year was fairly stable.

OBS Winter Sale Produces Mixed Results

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's winter mixed sale that ended on Tuesday produced results that were both positive and negative. The 494 horses sold grossed $4,231,900 and averaged of $8,567. Compared to last year's figures, the number sold and gross dropped by 27.8% and 21.5%, respectively. The average rose by 8.5%. In 2001, the 683 horses sold grossed $5,393,400 and averaged $7,897.The auction last for two days last year compared to four this year.

A yearling colt by Maria's Mon, sire of 2001 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Monarchos, brought $160,000 on Monday to top the consignor preferred session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's winter mixed sale in Central Florida. Kenneth L. and Sarah K. OBS Sale Ends With Major Declines From A Year Ago

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's fall mixed sale ended on Thursday with big declines from a year ago. The figures for the auction's four sessions combined were 838 horses sold for a gross of $6,210,700, and an average price of $7,411. The number sold and gross were down by 24.3% and 56.3%, respectively, and the average was down by 42.3%. In 2000, the 1,107 horses sold grossed $14,223,600 and averaged $12,849.

The average price didn't change much from a year ago, but the gross revenue and the median price were down significantly during the open portion of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's August yearling sale, which ended Friday in Central Florida after a four-day run. For all the open sessions combined, 686 horses were sold for a gross of $6,447,400, an average of $9,399, and a median of $5,000. The gross, average, and median were down by 13.2%, 2.5%, and 16.7% from a year ago when 771 yearlings were sold. The buy-back rate was 29.2%, up slightly from last year's rate of 28.1%.

A colt by End Sweep sold for $95,000 on Thursday to top the third open session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's August yearling sale. Marion G. Montanari bought the bay colt out of the 8-year-old winning Smile mare Susie Smile, who is a half-sister to stakes winner Lady Summerhill (by Bold Ruckus). New Jersey bloodstock agent Buzz Chace purchased the Florida-bred filly for William Lickle, a prominent owner of steeplechase horses. Lickle, according to Chace, is becoming increasingly interested in flat racing.

A pilot in trouble saw the "luscious green grass" of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's racetrack, and bailed out in the center of the Florida oval on Sunday morning. Neither the pilot, Leroy Morse, nor his passenger were injured, according to the Ocala Star-Banner.

Boreen, a gelding by Montbrook consigned by Ocala Stud Farms, brought $105,000 to top the opening session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Sale Tuesday, the sale company reported. Choctaw Racing bought Boreen, a half-brother to stakes winner Backatem and graded stakes placed Throwthebookatem. His quarter mile in :21 2/5 was the fastest work of Saturday's under tack show. He is out of the Deputy Minister mare Deputy's Mistress.

OBS Spring Sale Sets Records For Gross And Average

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's spring auction of 2-year-olds in training established sale records for gross revenue and median price during its four-day run that ended April 26 in Florida. In addition, the auction's record for the highest-priced horse was equaled when a Grindstone filly sold for $550,000 on the final day. The mark first was set in 1998, when Kaaren and Hays Biggs purchased Etbauer, a son of Silver Deputy who won the 1999 Rebel Stakes (gr. IIII).
