Goal Doubled for New York Heroes Fund

Due to a flood of early, generous contributions, the NTRA, Breeders' Cup Limited, and the New York Racing Association announced Friday it was doubling its goal for the NTRA Charities -- New York Heroes Fund to $2 million. The Heroes Fund, set up by the organizations a week ago, will aid the families of New York firefighters, police officers, emergency services personnel, and other victims who perished in the terrorist attacks on New York Sept. 11.

Hawk Wing Gives O'Brien Another Group I Win

Mrs. John Magnier's Hawk Wing rallied from last under jockey Michael Kinane to win Sunday's Aga Khan's Stud National Stakes (Ire-I), giving trainer Aidan O'Brien his 16th group I win of the year. On good to firm turf at the Curragh, Hawk Wing completed the seven furlongs in course-record time of 1:20.9.

Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier's Milan gave Coolmore and trainer Aidan O'Brien a victory in another of this year's English classics, winning Saturday's $310,000 Rothmans Royals St. Leger Stakes (Eng-I) by five lengths at Doncaster. American jockey Gary Stevens, stranded in England due to airline troubles caused by Tuesday's events, was in attendance.

Johannesburg Romps in Phoenix Stakes

Michael Tabor's Johannesburg remained undefeated by beating Miss Beabea by five lengths to win the Independent Waterford Wedgwood Phoenix Stakes (Ire-I) on Sunday at Leopardstown. Also on Sunday, American-bred Bahamian Pirate held off fellow American-bred One Won One to win the Phoenix Sprint Stakes (Ire-III) by a short head.

Galileo confirmed his victories in the Epsom (Eng-I) and Irish (Ire-I) Derbies with an authoritative performance against open company in Saturday's 51st renewal of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Eng-I) at Ascot. Piloted by regular rider Michael Kinane, Galileo earned his third group I win of the year Saturday while remaining undefeated after six career starts.

Galileo, the undefeated winner of the Epsom and Irish Derbies this year, squares off against Fantastic Light and 10 other runners in what promises to be a stirring rendition of the group I $1.07 million King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot. The race will be telecast live on ESPN News Saturday at 10:45 a.m. eastern time, and replayed Sunday on ESPN2 at 5:30 p.m. eastern.

Galileo, Golan Get Irish Up

Galileo and Golan, one-two finishers in the Epsom Derby (Eng-I), will square off Sunday in the Budweiser Irish Derby (Ire-I). Galileo, conditioned by Aidan O'Brien, has four wins from four starts after posting a 3 1/2-length victory in the Epsom Derby. He is being pointed toward Belmont Park and the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships Classic (gr.-I) in October. Galileo is a son of Sadler's Wells.

On Saturday, Aidan O'Brien-trained runners filled the top three finishing positions in the Entenmann's Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-I). 16-1 longshot Imagine completed the Irish Guineas double for the conditioner at the Curragh Sunday, winning the Entenmann's One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) under jockey Seamus Heffernan. All told, O'Brien's runners took five of the top six finishing positions in the two races, with his Toroca coming home third in Sunday's race.

Led by 20-1 longshot Black Minnaloushe, a trio of Aidan O'Brien trainees filled the top three finishing positions in the Entenmann's Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) on Saturday at the Curragh. Mozart finished second, with 2-1 favorite Minardi third. Tamburlaine, second to Golan in the English equivalent, finished fifth in the 12-horse field.

Rose Gypsy Wins French 1000 Guineas

Mrs. John Magnier's Rose Gypsy rebounded from two second-place finishes earlier in the year to win the Dubai Poule d'Essai des Pouliches--French One Thousand Guineas (Fr-I) on Sunday at Longchamp. Rose Gypsy won by a head over Banks Hill, with Lethals Lady another head back and a half-length ahead of fourth-place Tempting Fate.

Giant's Causeway, Crimplene To Meet in Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

Giant's Causeway and Best of the Bests, the respective first- and third-place finishers in the Esat Digifone Irish Champion Stakes (Ire-I) earlier this month, will meet again on Saturday in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Eng-I) at Ascot, England. Crimplene, a multiple group I winning filly, and Indian Lodge are also being pointed to the one-mile race, according to Sporting Life.

Giant's Causeway Best in Irish Champion Stakes

Giant's Causeway dueled with Best of the Bests through the stretch, edged clear of that rival in the final furlong, and held off the late closing Greek Dance to win the ESAT Digifone Irish Champion Stakes (Ire-I) by a 1/2 length Saturday at Leopardstown, Ireland. The win marks the fifth group I win in succession for Mrs. John Magnier and Micheal Tabor's 3-year-old colt, who completed the 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.1 over good to firm ground.
