Hollywood, TOC Hammer Out New Purse Agreement

Hollywood Park, in an agreement hammered out with horse owners, will restructure its overnight purses for the upcoming Autumn meeting and will also cut back the total number of racing days after losing its turf course, the California Horse Racing Board was told Nov. 3. The track has cut 11 stakes races worth $2.3 million as a result of the turf problem.

Lobbyists: Tribes, Not Candidates, Wield Power in California

California voters will decide Oct. 7 whether to recall Gov. Gray Davis and replace him with one of more than one hundred candidates. But as far as the three influential Sacrameno lobbyists are concerned, the decision doesn't figure to have much of an impact on Thoroughbred racing in the state.

Assembly Passes California Account Wagering Bill

The nation's most populous state is one step closer to offering account wagering. In the waning hours of the 2000 legislative session on Thursday night, the California Assembly voted 56-6 in favor of a compromise bill permitting what it calls "advance deposit wagering" for pari-mutuel racing but also requiring backstretch reforms that could result in labor unions being represented among stable workers.
