A weanling filly by City Zip sold for $55,000 to top the New York Breeders Sales Company's fall breeding stock sale Oct. 18 at Saratoga Race Course. New Jersey bloodstock agent Buzz Chace, acting on behalf of West Point Thoroughbreds, purchased her from Waldorf Farm, agent.

Taffy Davenport Tops Lousiana Mixed Sale

Taffy Davenport, who finished second in the 1998 Delaware Oaks, brought the top price of $6,000 during the Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana's mixed sale Oct. 17 at Serenity Farm in Folsom, La. Hay Hollow Racing Stable purchased the 14-year-old daughter of Miswaki from Simpson Farm, agent.

Average Declines 12.8% at OBS Fall Mixed Sale

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s fall mixed sale ended its two-day run Oct. 13 in Central Florida with moderate losses of 12.8% in its average price and 6.7% in its median price. There was a smaller catalog than in 2008, when the auction was three days long, and that contributed to a 30.7% plunge in gross revenue and a 20.6% decline in the number of horses sold.

Jazil Colt Tops First OBS Mixed Sale Session

A weanling colt in the first crop of 2006 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Jazil brought $77,000 to top the consignor preferred session of the Ocala Breeders's Sales Co. fall mixed auction Oct. 12 in Central Florida. The sale opened its two-day run in Central Florida with downturns of 24% in gross revenue, 39% in average price, and 50% in median price from last year.

Time Machine, a 3-year-old Halling gelding, was the most expensive horse sold on the second day of the Tattersalls July mixed sale in England, bringing 95,000 guineas. Irish trainer Robbie Hennessy purchased Time Machine on July 8 from trainer John Gosden's Clarehaven Stables.

The William Inglis & Son Melbourne March mixed sale ended at Oaklands in Australia March 13 with a clearance rate of 91%. The 329 horses that sold grossed Aust$1,369,600 (approximately $887,487 in U.S. funds). The average price was Aust$4,163 ($2,698), and the median price was Aust$2,200 ($1,426).

Sarissa, a 12-year-old Diesis - Wonderous Minstrel mare, brought the top price of 32,000 euros (approximately $40,489 in U.S. funds) during the Arqana February mixed sale at Deauville in France. French agent Abeth Mussat purchased her from Haras d'Etreham. Sarissa, who is in foal to Dylan Thomas, has produced two winners in Japan, Rock of Sarissa (by Rock of Gibraltar) and Loulan Reverse (by Montjeu).

Downward Trends Continue at F-T Sale

Prices tumbled at the the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale Feb. 9 in Lexington, following the downward trends that have been seen at other recent auctions. The average price dropped 42.8% while the median price fell 28.6%. A much smaller sale catalog than in 2008 contributed to the 62.9% decline in the gross revenue.

Chowhan Purchases Palomino Filly

Splash of Vanilla, believed to be the only Thoroughbred registered as a palomino that has ever been cataloged for a Keeneland sale, was sold for $14,000 to Dr. Naveed Chowhan during the final session of the January horses of all ages auction in Lexington. Chip Muth of Georgetown, Ky., signed the sale ticket for the 2-year-old filly with the golden coat Jan. 17.

White Prince, whose $60,000 price topped the fifth session of the Keeneland January horses of all ages auction in Lexington Jan. 16, did not go to a new home. Maria's Mon Colt Shines at Keeneland

A Maria's Mon colt became the highest-priced yearling sold at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale so far when he was purchased for $390,000 by Florida pinhooker Jimmy Gladwell in the name of Ferguson Valley Ranch Jan. 14 in Lexington. The immediate underbidder on the handsome chestnut was Brian Graves, who is the director of public sales for the Beck family's Kentucky-based Gainesway Farm.

Even though it's a new year, the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. winter mixed sale was the victim of the same worldwide economic crisis that caused prices at many Thoroughbred auctions to plummet late in 2008. The gross revenue plunged 57.7% from a year ago while the average price and median price dropped 39.6% and 45.5%, respectively.

The Fasig-Tipton Texas December mixed sale, which was the last major Thoroughbred auction of the year in this country, followed the downward trend that has plagued the equine marketplace in recent months. The gross revenue plummeted 46.7% Dec. 14 compared to a year ago, while the average price dropped 36%. The median declined 14.3%.

Barretts Equine Ltd., based at Fairplex Park in Southern California, doesn't have an October mixed sale listed on its 2009 auction schedule. The struggling American economy and downturns in the Thoroughbred marketplace contributed to the decision not to hold the sale, according to Barretts president and general manager Jerry McMahon, who recently announced his resignation from the company.
