Voters in Miami-Dade County, Fla., approved slot machines for Calder Race Course and the county's two other pari-mutuel facilities in a Jan. 29 referendum. They passed the ballot issue by a 63%-37% margin--a decisive victory in a race many observers expected would be close.

Calder Race Course in South Florida has launched its campaign for the Jan. 29, 2008, Miami-Dade County vote on whether to allow Las Vegas-style slot machines at pari-mutuel facilities.
Calder Race Course moved a small step closer to having slot machines when a Miami-Dade County committee passed a resolution June 12 to allow for a countywide vote next year.
Calder Race Course and Flagler Dog Track and Sports Entertainment Center,have initiated a formal request before a committee of the Miami-Dade County Commission for a referendum for voters to consider the inclusion of slot machines at the three existing pari-mutuel facilities in Miami-Dade County.

Following the defeat Tuesday of a referendum that would have permitted slot-machine gaming at Churchill Downs Inc.-owned Calder Race Course in Florida's Miami-Dade County, company president and chief executive officer Tom Meeker said CDI is encouraged by slots approval in a neighboring county and would continue to seek alternative gaming.
