Maria's Mon Colt Tops First Session Of OBS Mixed Sale

A yearling colt by Maria's Mon, sire of 2001 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Monarchos, brought $160,000 on Monday to top the consignor preferred session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's winter mixed sale in Central Florida. Kenneth L. and Sarah K. Ramsey bought the dark bay or brown colt out of the winning Farma Way mare Cowgirl.. He was consigned by Nancy Bauman, agent for Bob Seeger.

Maria's Mon Colt Tops Keeneland Session; Average Slips

A Maria's Mon colt produced from Madeira M'dear (by Black Tie Affair) brought a top bid of $575,000 to top Friday's fourth session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The colt, sired by the same sire of this year's Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos, was consigned by Michael T. Barnett's Blackburn Farm, as agent.

Oxley Extends Research Pledge Through Preakness and Belmont

John Oxley, the owner of Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) favorite Monarchos, announced today that he has extended his pledge of one per cent of purse earnings to the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation if his three-year-old colt wins Saturday's Preakness Stakes and/or the Belmont Stakes June 9. The total purses for the Preakness and Belmont Stakes are each $1,000,000.

Stallion Owners Get Involved in Race-For-Charity Pledge

The partnership that owns the stallion Maria's Mon has pledged contributions to equine research should Monarchos, who's by Maria's Mon, win Saturday's grade I Wood Memorial Stakes and/or the grade I Kentucky Derby May 5. The pledge was announced by Mrs. Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stud, home of Maria's Mon, the champion 2-year-old of 1995.

Louisiana 2-Year-Old Sale Average Up 15.3%

While the number of horses sold and gross were down, the average rose 15.3% at Fair Grounds Sales Co.'s 2-year-olds in training sale held March 13. A total of 23 juveniles were sold for $384,300 at the New Orleans sale, good for an average of $16,708. Last year, 31 2-year-olds sold for $449,200 for an average of $14,490.

Cee's Tizzy Still Tops; Big Moves For Maria's Mon, Quiet American

Leading sire Cee's Tizzy has company in the millionaire club by 2001 progeny earnings. Maria's Mon, whose son Monarchos earned $600,000 in winning the March 10 Florida Derby (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park, increased his yearly earnings to $1,060,461 and in the process zoomed from 39th to second on the sire's list. Champion 2-year-old male in 1995, Maria's Mon (Wavering Monarch -- Carlotta Maria, by Caro) stands at Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stud near Versailles, Ky.
