OBS Fall Mixed Sale Has 688 Horses

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. has cataloged 688 horses for its two-day fall mixed sale in Central Florida. There will be a consignor preferred session Oct. 12 with 290 lots, and it will be followed by an open session Oct. 13. Selling will begin on both days at 10:30 a.m. (EDT).

SITA Will Clarify Policy on Aged Mares

The Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers (SITA) will clarify its policy on aged broodmares during its next meeting, according to a press release issued by the organization on July 10. Based on comments by Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland officials, there was confusion about the portion of the policy that addresses broodmares 18 years of age and older and whether the ban recommended by SITA concerns all broodmares of that age or only broodmares of that age that are not in foal.

MRLS-Related Advisory Prompted by Forecast

Weather forecasts for the evening of April 24 in Central Kentucky have prompted University of Kentucky scientists to advise farm owners to temporarily restrict horses from eating pasture grass. The advisory is because of mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS), which hit at this time last year after an unusual weather pattern.

Mare Study's Preliminary Results Are Encouraging

There are no significant differences between mares bred in Kentucky and mares bred in Florida, according to the preliminary results of a study that was designed to determine the effects of mare reproductive loss system (MRLS). Drs. Tom Riddle and Kent Vince of Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington used ultrasound exams to compare the allantoic and amniotic fluids of the two groups. They also looked at fetal heart rates.
