Gulfstream Park Report: A Subtle Upset

They are all far too diplomatic to mention it, of course. Both Bill Mott and Pat Day spent the better part of 20 minutes, after the Mott-saddled Subtle Power capitalized on a rail-skimming ride from Day to win the Feb. 10 Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IT), denying that there was any special satisfaction that came from defeating Jerry Bailey on even-money Ciro.

Manndar, Thesaurus Work Toward Gulf BCup Handicap

Manndar and Thesaurus, both slated to go postward in Saturday's $200,000 Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. I) at 1 3/8 miles on the turf, were on the track for morning trials on Tuesday. Manndar, recently shipped from California for the turf route, had his first workout over the local strip breezing a half-mile in :49 1/5. Trainer Ken McPeek had Thesaurus breeze five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 on Tuesday. A 7-year-old roan gelding, Thesaurus finished second in the GPBC Handicap last year and gets into this edition of the race with 113 pounds.

Manndar Seeks to Make Amends For San Gabriel

Manndar, one of the top turf horses in the country, was flown in from California and will run next in the $200,000 Gulfstream Park Breeders' Cup Handicap over 1 3/8 miles on the turf on Saturday. Trained by C. Beau Greely, Manndar arrived at Gulfstream last Thursday morning and is stabled with the horses in trainer Scotty Schulhofer's barn.

Irish Prize squeezed past the leaders in the final stretch and held on to edge Manndar for the victory Monday in the $150,000 San Gabriel Handicap at Santa Anita. Manndar, the 6-5 favorite, finished ahead of Here Comes Big C in the handicap for 4-year-olds and up.

Charge d'Affaires Upsets Citation Field; Ladies Din Second Again

Under a patient ride by jockey Jose Santos, Charge d'Affaires split horses in the stretch and bested Ladies Din in a race to the wire to win the $500,000 Citation Handicap (gr. IIT) Saturday at Hollywood Park. Native Desert closed for third. Super Quercus was fourth, and Manndar fifth.

Drysdale: No Decision On War Chant's Status

War Chant, winner of the Breeders' Cup Mile and Oak Tree Breeders' Cup Mile in his only two grass outings, remains fit and ready for a possible final start in Sunday's $500,000 Early Times Hollywood Derby before retirement to stud. Trainer Neil Drysdale said Tuesday morning that owner-breeder Irving Cowan has not advised him of any decision as to whether War Chant, who worked seven furlongs here Sunday, would run.
