Two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan was taken to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington May 16 for emergency colic surgery, according to trainer Charlie LoPresti.
In one of the more dramatic victories of his career, Wise Dan held off a late surge from Juddmonte Farms' Seek Again to post a narrow victory in the $559,100 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes (gr. IT) May 3.
Wise Dan took his first step toward a possible third straight Horse of the Year title with a measured victory in the $300,000 Maker's 46 Mile (gr. IT) on the Keeneland turf April 11.
Wise Dan once again swept a trio of Eclipse Awards at the ceremony in South Florida Jan. 18, adding a second consecutive Horse of the Year title to his outstanding turf male and older male honors.

The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association will honor numerous owners and breeders at its 28th Annual National Awards Dinner Sept. 6 at Fasig-Tipton in Lexington.
Heavily favored Wise Dan ran his winning streak to eight while rolling to a repeat victory in the $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap (gr. IIT) at Saratoga Race Course, defeating pacesetter King Kreesa by 1 1/4 lengths Aug. 10.
Horse of the Year Wise Dan went out to the Oklahoma turf course at Saratoga Race Course the morning of July 27 and unleashed a sensational move in preparation for the Aug. 10 Fourstardave Handicap (gr. IIT).
The conditions were dreadful, the weight spread oppressive, but Wise Dan found a way to overcome all adversity to capture the Firecracker Handicap (gr. IIT) on the night of June 29 over yielding turf at rainy Churchill Downs.
Enchanting Lisa, a 3-year-old half sister to Horse of the Year Wise Dan, won her debut June 12 in a romp over a maiden special weight field on the synthetic track at Presque Isle Downs.
Defending Horse of the Year Wise Dan will likely target the Firecracker Handicap at Churchill, trainer Charlie LoPresti said May 23. His half brother, Successful Dan, is on track for the June 15 Stephen Foster there.
Horse of the Year Wise Dan ran his winning streak to six races and surpassed $4 million in career earnings handily in the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (gr. IT) over yielding ground May 4 at Churchill Downs.
Morton Fink's Lisa Danielle, the dam of Horse of the Year Wise Dan, was honored April 25 as Broodmare of the Year by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association at its annual awards luncheon.

It's unusual when a turf horse gets recognition beyond his favorite surface, so for Wise Dan to be voted champion turf male of 2012, champion older male, and Horse of the Year shows how dominating he is.
Nominees include eight Eclipse Award winners and the dams of 2012 grade I winners Beholder, Wise Dan, Point of Entry, and Dullahan.
Leading Horse of the Year candidate Wise Dan returned to the track Jan. 7 following some turnout time at trainer Charlie Lopresti's Forest Lane Farm near Lexington, joining Successful Dan and Turallure.
Charlie Lopresti sent top Breeders' Cup Mile contender Wise Dan through an Oct. 20 breeze at Keeneland in preparation for his upcoming bid at the World Championships, and the versatile runner responded with usual alacrity.
Morton Fink's homebred Wise Dan showed why he was the odds-on favorite in the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IT), rallying five wide to win by a decisive 2 1/4 lengths over 48-1 longshot Willcox Inn Oct. 6.

With his smashing victory Sept. 16 in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (Can-IT), Wise Dan underlined that he is a formidable performer on any surface.
Wise Dan has earned his way into the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) this fall and would be one of the favorites after his smashing win as the 1-2 choice in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile (Can-IT) Sept. 16 on the Woodbine grass course.
Successful Dan took advantage of a contested early pace and wore down the leaders to set a new Churchill Downs 1 1/16 mile track record while winning the $337,800 Alysheba Stakes (gr. II) May 4.
Wise Dan, a grade I winner in his final start of 2011, picked up right where he left off in his first race of the year, romping by 10 1/2 lengths while setting a Keeneland Polytrack record in the $150,000 Ben Ali Stakes.
Versatile gelding Wise Dan registered the first grade I victory of his career when he wore down Mission Impazible in the final furlong to easily capture the $500,000 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs Nov. 25.
Wise Dan came away with the lead coming off the turn and ran away to a four-length victory in the $150,000 Fayette Stakes (gr. II) on closing day of Keeneland Oct.29.
