Smooth as silk under jockey Gary Stevens, Beholder vanquished both two-time champion Royal Delta and Princess of Sylmar while rolling to an open-lengths victory in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) Nov. 1.
Beholder left no doubt that she is ready to take on the best distaffers on the continent after easily going gate-to-wire in the Zenyatta Stakes (gr. I) against a salty group of shippers and older fillies and mares.
Vacation time may be over for Beholder but last year's champion 2-year-old filly simply toyed with her four rivals in the $100,000 Torrey Pine Stakes Sept. 1 at Del Mar.
Spendthrift Farm's Beholder easily defeated five foes in the Santa Anita Oaks and will move on to contest the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) as one of the top choices.
Compromised by a throat ulcer in her first start of the year, the real Beholder showed up in the $250,000 Las Virgenes Stakes (gr. I) March 2 at Santa Anita Park, romping over seven 3-year-old filly opponents.
Nominees include eight Eclipse Award winners and the dams of 2012 grade I winners Beholder, Wise Dan, Point of Entry, and Dullahan.
B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm has announced a raise in stud fee for its leading freshman sire Into Mischief, who will now stand for $10,000 stands and nurses during the 2013 breeding season.
Beholder, a 2-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Henny Hughes, demolished a first-condition allowance field at Santa Anita Park Oct. 4 by 11 lengths and had trainer Richard Mandella pondering a follow-up in the Breeders' Cup.

Harlan's Holiday, who currently ranks second on the leading freshman sires list, is one of several grandsons of Storm Cat who are proving themselves as sires. His top runner to date is Into Mischief, winner of the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) at Hollywood Park on Dec. 22. Harlan's Holiday has also been represented by stakes winners Tasha's Miracle, Bear Holiday, P.S.U. Grad, and Harlan's Song.
