Maryland Governor Introduces Slots Bill

Gov. Robert Ehrlich of Maryland introduced a bill Thursday that would allow for 10,500 slot machines to be installed at racetracks in the state. Track operators would receive about 25% of slot revenue -- which is projected to be $1.6 billion by 2006 -- and horsemen would receive 8%.

Maryland Handle Edges Upward 1 Percent in 2001

The Maryland Jockey Club reported that pari-mutuel handle from all sources totaled $535,813,090 in 2001, compared to $530,833,234 in 2000, despite the fact that there were three less live Thoroughbred days and 14 fewer Standardbred days run during the year. The increase in total handle was just 1 percent.

The Maryland Jockey Club slashed 22 stakes races worth $1.7 million from its racing program the rest of the year at Pimlico and Laurel Park.
