Beacon Shine Dies After Bout of Colic

Beacon Shine, a 3-year-old son of Montbrook owned by Kinsman Stable, died April 8 after a bout of colic. The colt, trained by Hall of Famer Nick Zito, was based at Churchill Downs and was entered to run in last Sunday's $100,000 Lafayette Stakes at Keeneland.

Plenty of Fire in More Smoke's Lafayette Win

More Smoke popped the gate in a hurry from his inside post for jockey Clinton Potts and was never headed as he upset prohibitive favorite Razor and blazed to an eye-popping 14 1/2-length win in the $107,100 Lafayette (gr. III) for 3-year-old sprinters at Keeneland Sunday.

Stakes Purses Increased at Evangeline Downs

When Evangeline Downs opens its season April 1, purses for several stakes races will see noticeable increases, thanks to the positive impact of expanded gaming at the Carencro, La., oval. Most notable is the return to prominence of the Evangeline Mile, which received a $25,0000 increase to make the Aug. 14 race now worth $100,000.

A well-matched field of 3-year-old sprinters passed the entry box for Sunday's Lafayette Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland. The seven-furlong race carries a purse of $100,000 added. Heading the cast is Fabien Ouaki and Patrick Biancone's Whywhywhy.
