Wild Desert to Miss Travers Due to Suspensory Injury

Queen's Plate winner Wild Desert, who had been training sharply in preparation for the $1-million Travers Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 27, will miss the "Mid-Summer Derby" and likely be out the rest of the year due to a suspensory injury, according to trainer Richard Dutrow.

P Val to Ride Wild Desert in Ark. Derby; Owner to Offer Challenge

Patrick Valenzuela has been named to ride Lane's End Stakes (gr. II) runner-up Wild Desert in the April 16 Arkansas Derby (gr. II), majority owner Dan Borislow said Monday. If Wild Desert runs well enough at Oaklawn to merit a trip to the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), Valenzuela will remain aboard.

Jones on Smarty Jones: 'I Was Blown Away'

Keith Jones believes he has called about 40,000 races in his career, but he clearly remembers the ninth race at Philadelphia Park on Nov. 22 of last year. Jones said it is among the most impressive performances he ever has seen on the track.
