Juvenile Sale Review: Down 30% or More

When sale company officials, consignors, and buyers analyzed the Thoroughbred marketplace in the past, they often mentioned how well demand for the most expensive horses was holding up. But during the latest economic downturn, which has sparked financial crises around the world, even the top of the market is taking a pounding based on the combined results for the first four major select sales of 2-year-olds in training.

Stable Market: Non-Select Juvenile Sales in Review

Non-select sales of 2-year-olds in training experienced declines in gross revenue, average price, and median price in 2002. Usually such negative trends are signs of poor economic health. But the losses tended to be minor, and were offset, in part, by a significant decrease in the buy-back rate. In the final analysis, the market for modest juvenile stock this year was fairly stable.

Keeneland Sale Horses Display Speed in Workouts

Speed was in abundance at Keeneland Racecourse on Monday, but it had nothing to do with the current race meet underway at the Lexington, Ky. track. A dark day in which there was no live racing, Monday was devoted to workouts by juveniles consigned to the April 16 sale of 2-year-olds in training.

Juvenile Consignors To Sponsor Futurity Races

In an attempt to attract more buyers to juvenile auctions, the National Association of 2-Year-Old Consignors will sponsor a pair of restricted stakes at Delaware Park this year. The NATC Futurity will have two divisions, one for colts and geldings and one for fillies. Both will be run at six furlongs on Labor Day weekend, and both will have a purse of $100,000 guaranteed. The value of each race is expected to exceed $200,000.The divisions will be open to any 2-year-old consigned by an NATC member who also is a contributor to the organization's advertising fund.

More of the Same at Keeneland's Juvenile Sale

Sale records were established for average and median during Keeneland's April auction of 2-year-olds in training. But those results didn't tell the whole story about what happened on a cold and snowy spring day in Central Kentucky. The buy-back rate inched upward to a sale-record high. The number sold plunged to a sale-record low. And consignors complained often about buyers who were too picky and too few in numbers. In other words, the auction experienced many of the same problems that afflicted earlier juvenile sales this year in Florida and California.

Panel Debates Use Of Clenbuterol At Juvenile Sales

Should consignors be allowed to medicate sale 2-year-olds with clenbuterol right before they breeze in under tack shows? The answers to that question were mixed during a panel discussion that was conducted during a meeting of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers' Club Tuesday night in Lexington.
