G Three Stable's Smoked Em set unpressured fractions en route to a two-length win over Magic Weisner in Saturday's $107,250 Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico. Smoked Em's victory snapped 9-10 favorite Magic Weisner's five-race winning streak.

Bailey Regains Position on Top of Jockeys' Standings

In 1999 and again in 2000, Jerry Bailey lost photo finishes to Pat Day for leading rider by North American earnings. In 2001, however, Bailey made sure the camera was not necessary by finishing a furlong ahead of his competition. By the time his 12-month rampage across the continent (plus the Dubai World Cup, UAE-I) was in the books, Bailey had absolutely shattered Gary Stevens' three-year-old record for earnings, his $22,597,720 besting the old mark by better than $4 million.

Steve Haskin's Classic Report: Fantastic Sees the Light

Unlike his non-work last Friday, Fantastic Light lit up the Belmont track Tuesday, as he blazed five furlongs in :59 4/5 with jockey Frankie Dettori aboard, flying home his final quarter in :23 2/5 and galloping out a strong six furlongs in 1:12 3/5. Private clockers caught him a tick faster in :59 3/5. About an hour and a half later, Godolphin's other star, Sakhee, also showed more life, working his five furlongs in 1:01, with regular exercise rider Lee Roebuck up.

Steve Haskin's Breeders' Cup Classic Report

One more week and the Breeders' Cup Classic picture should come into focus. The Meadowlands Cup produced a definite starter in Include, who ran a huge race to finish third, and a possible starter in Gander, who led all the way to score a gutsy and well-deserved victory. Macho Uno finished third in the Ohio Derby and is still on course for the Classic.

Fair Grounds Report: All Inclusive

The voice over the public address system said, "Bring your horses over for the eighth race." Trainer Grover (Bud) Delp had brought hundreds of horses over for the eighth race and was in no hurry. In his mind, this horse was special and everything had to be perfect. The object of Delp's attention was the improving 4-year-old Include. The handsome son of Broad Brush stood in his stall like a gentleman while the groom applied the moistened tongue-tie and slipped a set of yellow blinkers over the colt's head. "He can be a handful," Delp said, "so we tack him up in the stall. That seems to keep him in a frame of mind where he is relaxed and focused at the same time. It's not standard procedure but you have to do it the way the horse tells you."
