Eclipse Award finalist Siphonic will make his first start as a 3-year-old in the Jan. 19 Santa Catalina Stakes as trainer David Hofmans tries to win the $150,000 race for the second straight year. As of Jan. 9, Siphonic is Bally's 5-1 future-book favorite for the Kentucky Derby.
Millennium Wind, unraced since an 11th-place effort in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), makes his return to the track in today's $74,000 Skywalker Handicap over a flat mile at Santa Anita. The Cryptoclearance colt captured the grade I Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland by a front-running 5 1/4 lengths under Laffit Pincay Jr., who shows up on his back again today.
To paraphrase Horace Greeley, it is quite evident that all the good young men have gone west, and are now ready to head back east in an attempt to conquer the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Belmont Park. The West Coast natives have absolutely dominated this division in the key months and weeks heading up to championship day Oct. 27. And if there was any doubt about that, there is none remaining after Officer's smashing win in the Champagne Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont, at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile distance, Oct. 6.
Pedigree Analysis for Siphonic
Keeneland's graded stakes races Saturday displayed a study of contrasts. About an hour after 9-year-old Bet On Sunshine closed from last place in the $166,470 Phoenix Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III) to earn his 21st victory from 41 starts, 2-year-old Siphonic led from start to finish in the $281,728 Lane's End Breeders' Futurity Stakes (gr. II).
Under veteran rider Chris McCarron, Starrer utilized a wide rally in the stretch to overcome favored Love At Noon en route to winning Saturday's $100,000 Princess Stakes (gr. II) by 1 1/2 lengths at Hollywood Park.
Trainer David Hofmans said Monday that Millennium Wind is recovering well from injuries sustained in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and remains pointed toward the $500,000 Swaps Stakes (gr. I).
Millennium Wind, a half-brother of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Charismatic, will likely face Breeders Cup Juvenile (gr. I) runner-up Point Given in the $200,000 Hollywood Futurity (gr. I), Saturday at Hollywood Park.
Follow the Money earned her second graded stakes win on the year in the $150,000 Dahlia Handicap (gr. IIT), Saturday at Hollywood Park.
Follow the Money tracked early pacesetter Dominique's Joy and then dueled through the stretch with Melody Queen to win the $150,000 Violet Handicap (gr. IIIT) by a neck Friday night at Meadowlands.
Elizabeth and Tom Baxter's Cindy's Hero charged along the rail while rounding the turn to move into contention, was swung out for racing room approaching the stretch by jockey Garrett Gomez, and closed gamely though the stretch to earn her first career win in the $250,000 Del Mar Debutante (gr. I) Saturday at Del Mar.
