Tampa Bay Downs Enjoys Record Meet

Tampa Bay Downs concluded its 76th anniversary season of Thoroughbred racing May 5th with handle its live races from all-sources averaging nearly $2.1 million per day. The previous high was 1.8 million per day during the 1999-2000 season.

More than $14.5 million has been wagered through California's advance deposit wagering system in the first two months of operation, or about 3.5% of total handle. Keeneland Alters Takeout Rates for Spring Meet

Keeneland, which last fall experimented with a reduced 16 percent pari-mutuel takeout, has made adjustments for its spring meet, which begins April 5. The takeout for win, place, and show wagers will remain 16 percent, but for exotic bets, it will go back up to 19 percent.

Higher Attendance and Handle for Hollywood Park

Hollywood Park concluded its autumn meet Monday with a 4.8% increase in attendance and a 2.8% increase in total handle. The growth was particularly encouraging since it rained during the Southern California's 11th annual Turf Festival, the biggest day of the meet.

Remington Park's Meet Slumps

Remington Park reported across-the-board declines in attendance and handle for its 59-day meet that ended Nov. 24. The Oklahoma City racetrack reported a 4.3% decline in average daily attendance to 2,337 and an 11.5% drop in average daily on-track handle to $120,551.

Youbet.com Reduces Loss, Gains Subscribers

Youbet.com reduced its net loss for the first quarter of the year by 31% to $2.4 million, or 12 cents per share. During the same period a year ago, the company reported a net loss of $3.4 million, or 17 cents per share. The online horse racing and wagering service also gained 1,400 new subscribers between Jan. 1 and March 31.

Woodbine's purses got a huge boost after 1,700 slot machines began ringing in the spring. The higher purses, in turn, led to substantial increases in on-track and off-track handle for the 160-day Thoroughbred meet.

Arlington International Racecourse reported a significant increase in handle and solid attendance following its 103-day meet. Total handle from all sources increased 10.7% to $333,177,106, up from a total handle of $300.9 million reported in 1997, which is when Arlington last ran a live meet. Last year, Arlington's dates were run at Hawthorne Race Course.
