Oxley Foundation Issues Challenge to Assist Horse Research

The Oxley Foundation has issued a challenge grant of up to $1-million to the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation to raise funds dedicated to the safety and health of horses. The challenge allows the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation to qualify for matching funds of $1-million over the next four years by successfully raising $250,000 annually in new contributions.

Belmont Ball Raised $175,000 for Research

The Belmont Ball, hosted by the New York Racing Association on June 5 at Belmont Park, raised more than $175,000 for the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. The black-tie event this year honored internationally renowned equine artist Richard Stone Reeves and also paid tribute to Affirmed on the 25th anniversary of his Triple Crown triumph.

Grayson-Jockey Club OKs $748,000 for Research

The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation board of directors has approved $748,116 in funding for 19 research projects for 2003. It increases the organization's total for equine research since 1983 to more than $10 million.

Genome Research Panel Scheduled For AQHA Convention

The benefits of equine genome research will be explored during a presentation on March 2 at the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) convention in Dallas, Texas. "Genome Research 101 for the Horse Industry" will be held from 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (CST) at the Hotel Inter-Continental Dallas. It will sponsored by the the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), AQHA, Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, and the Morris Animal Foundation.

The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and the Commonwealth of Kentucky held a press conference late Sept. 20 to announce that they are splitting the cost of bringing in expert help to look at all of the health problems seen in Kentucky this spring. A team headed by Dr. Noah Cohen of Texas A&M University will look at not only records of aborted fetuses and dead foals sent to the Kentucky Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center, but also at records from the two large referral equine practices in Central Kentucky and private practitioners.

By John Hettinger -- To my way of thinking, one of the most positive developments in our industry in recent times has been the increased concern for the health and welfare of the horse.

Grayson Foundation's Triple Crown

Although there was no Triple Crown winner on the track this year, each of the Triple Crown races represented a boost for equine research. The owners of both winning colts, Monarchos and Point Given, had each pledged 1% of the purses to Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

Two Colts 'Racing for Research' in Belmont Stakes

John Oxley, owner of Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos, and Gary and Mary
West, owners of Dollar Bill, have pledged to donate 1% of the winner's share of the purse to the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation with a victory in Saturday's Belmont Stakes. The winner's share of the grade I event is $600,000, which means $6,000 would go toward research.

National City, Stonerside Make Research Donations

National City Bank of Kentucky donated $25,000 specifically to support research into the cause and prevention of the equine loss syndrome seen in Central Kentucky and several other states since late April. Also, Robert and Janice McNaris' Stonerside Stable announced that 1% of the purses earned by Congaree in any remaining Triple Crown races and in this year's Breeders' Cup will go to the same research.

Monarchos Races For Charity

Monarchos' victory in the May 5 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) will provide the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation with a donation of $8,120 from owners John and Debby Oxley, and another $8,120 from the syndicate that owns the colt's sire, Maria's Mon.

Stallion Owners Get Involved in Race-For-Charity Pledge

The partnership that owns the stallion Maria's Mon has pledged contributions to equine research should Monarchos, who's by Maria's Mon, win Saturday's grade I Wood Memorial Stakes and/or the grade I Kentucky Derby May 5. The pledge was announced by Mrs. Josephine Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stud, home of Maria's Mon, the champion 2-year-old of 1995.

Oxley's Triple Crown Contenders to Race for Equine Research

John C. Oxley, who with wife Debby has a pair of Triple Crown candidates in Florida Derby (gr. I) winner Monarchos and graded stakes-placed Hero's Tribute, announced that 1% of money either colt wins through victories in grade I races through the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) will be earmarked for the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation. The donations are retroactive to the Florida Derby, in which Monarchos earned $600,000 (which provided $6,000 to the foundation).
