John Gorham of Steeplechase Farm announced that grade I-winning millionaire Mandy's Gold has been retired to Robert N. Clay's Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky.
It was scratched down to a four-horse field, but there was still plenty of drama Friday in the Pimlico Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. III). Summer Colony took the lead in the stretch and looked like she would win the race for the second straight year, but Jerry Bailey drove favored Mandy's Gold by in the final yards to take the $150,000 race by a neck.
Three trainers will make their first starts in a Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championship when the gates open for the Distaff (gr. I). But none of them feel the weight of the championship because they have so much of their confidence in their horses.
Steeplechase Farm's Mandy's Gold will be shooting for her fifth consecutive win in the $250,000 Ballerina Stakes (gr. I) for fillies and mares at seven furlongs Aug. 25.
