There is no doubt that the $1 million Woodbine Mile (Can-IT) will draw the majority of the public's attention Sept. 7 at the Canadian racetrack. But highlighted by several high-profile turfers vying for more than $1 million in purses, the two supporting stakes on Woodbine's 11-race card are very appetizing in their own right.
In just her third start on grass, Forever Together announced her arrival in the turf female division with a visually impressive win July 26 in the Diana Stakes (gr. IT) at Saratoga.
Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard said Augustin Stables' Forever Together came out of the Diana Handicap (gr. IT) in good shape after defeating Dynaforce by three-quarters of a length. It was the first graded-stakes turf win for the 4-year-old roan filly, who has dramatically improved since she switched surfaces.
Making only the third turf start of her career, Forever Together rallied from last, angled out in the stretch under Julien Leparoux and flew past Dynaforce inside the sixteenth-pole to take the $500,000 Diana Stakes (gr. IT) July 26 at Saratoga.
Street Sounds, making her first start for trainer Michael Matz since winning the Selima Stakes last November on the turf at Laurel, stayed well off the rail at Keeneland Thursday afternoon, scoring a neck victory over favorite Forever Together in the $250,000 Stonerside Beaumont Stakes (gr. II).
Grade I winner Sutra is the 123-pound highweight for Thursday's $250,000 Stonerside Beaumont (gr. II) at Keeneland, a race for 3-year-old fillies at about seven furlongs.
Augustin Stable's Forever Together kept her perfect record intact Saturday at Gulfstream Park, drawing clear to a two-length victory over Elk Manor Farm's favored Silver Knockers in the $150,000 Forward Gal Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs.
A field of seven 3-year-old fillies is set for the seven-furlong Forward Gal Stakes (gr. II) March 10 at Gulfstream Park. Heading the group is Demoiselle Stakes (gr. II) winner Boca Grande.
