Tatts December Foal Sale Finishes Strongly

The Tattersalls December foal sale finished with a flourish on the fourth and final day Nov. 28 in England. Ten weanlings sold for 100,000 guineas ($172,951 in U.S. funds) or more apiece, and the gross for the entire auction grew to more than 20,000,000 guineas ($34,590,150).

Gross Soars 55.1% at Tattersalls Foal Sale

Business boomed on the third day of the Tattersalls December foal sale Nov. 27 in England. The gross revenue rose 55.1% from a year ago while the average price and median price increased 21.7% and 14.3%, respectively. Thirty weanlings sold for 100,000 guineas ($173,000 in U.S. funds) or more apiece, and seven each brought 200,000 guineas ($346,000) or more.

Clearance Rate Improves at Tatts Foal Sale

The Tattersalls December foal sale opened Nov. 25 in England with 159 horses selling for a gross of 1,154,100 guineas ($2.026 million). The average price was 7,258 guineas ($12,740), and the median price was 3,700 guineas ($6,500). Direct comparisons with last year's longer five day sale are difficult, but the clearance rate of 69% was significantly up from the first and second day last year and the turnover was greater the first two days combined.

Changes Made in Japanese Auction

The Japan Racing Horse Association has changed its format for the July select foal and yearling sale for 2010. There will be two days of selling instead of three at the Northern Horse Park on the Japanese island of Hokkaido and more yearlings will be offered.

The Japan Racing Horse Association (JRHA) foal sale suffered downturns of 33.1% in gross and 32.3% in average during its two-day run that ended July 15 at the Northern Horse Park on the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The three-day gross for the foal and yearling sales combined was down 21.4% from the previous year and the average fell 21.9%.

A half-brother to two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Deep Impact was the star of the opening session of the Japan Racing Horse Association foal sale, bringing the highest price of 165-million yen (approximately $1,736,842 in U.S. funds) July 14 at the Northern Horse Park on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The Japan Racing Horse Association has cataloged 161 yearlings and 336 foals for its July select sale. The auction will be held at the Northern Horse Park on the island of Hokkaido, with the yearlings being offered July 13 and the foals being offered July 14-15.

Tattersalls' December sale ended quietly in England with a breeding stock session in which a 3-year-old colt, sold as a jumping prospect, topped trade at 65,000 guineas. The other figures for Dec. 4 were 139 horses sold, a gross of 656,650 guineas, an average price of 4,724 guineas, and a median price of 2,800 guineas. During the four-day breeding stock portion of the December auction, the 610 horses that sold grossed 33,355,150 guineas and averaged 54,681 guineas. The median was 12,500 guineas.

Tattersalls' five-day December foal ended in England Nov. 29 with figures sharply down from 2007's results. The 14,549,100-guinea gross fell 49% while the 25,888-guinea average price declined 29%. The 8,750-guinea median price dropped 56%. Sixty percent of the weanlings offered found new homes.

The median price was 2,000 guineas. Last year, during the opening session, the 131 horses sold grossed 1,086,600 guineas and averaged 8,295 guineas. The median was 4,000 guineas.

Invincible Spirit Colt a Goffs Star

A son of Invincible Spirit topped the fourth session of the Goffs November foal sale in Ireland, bringing 72,000 euros from Summerhill Bloodstock Nov. 20. Consigned by the Irish National Stud, the colt is out of Indienne (by Indian Ridge), who is a full sister to Irish group III winner St Clair Ridge. While racing in America, St Clair Ridge captured the 1999 Marie P. DeBartolo Oaks at Louisiana Downs and the 2000 Hillsborough Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

Modigliani Colt Leads Way at Goffs

There was a clearance rate of just 25% on the opening day of Goffs' November foal sale at Kill, Ireland when 48 of the 193 lots offered were listed as sold. The gross for Nov. 17 was 300,800 euros, and the average price was 6,267 euros.

Officials of Goffs Ireland were delighted with the results of their foal and mare sales. The six-day run of auctions ended on Sunday with increases all round in turnover (+11.%), average (+8.4%), and median (+10%), though there were still plenty who failed to sell.
