Steve Haskin's Preakness Report (5/17): War Zone

A war zone. That's what posts 8 through 12 are going to be in Saturday's Preakness Stakes, as a five-horse stampede is going to come charging out of the gate and down the Pimlico stretch for the first time. And it's all the result of Bob Baffert and Company choosing post 8, resulting in the connections of the other speed horses to all select outside posts.

Motion Still Thinking Preakness for Equality

Trainer H. Graham Motion is will be more than an interested spectator when he watches Saturday's Kentucky Derby. Motion will use what he sees Saturday to gauge whether he should enter Equality in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) two weeks later.

Gulfstream Park Race Report: First Flight

The bird has flown, leaving us instead with the Aventura Stakes, Gulfstream Park's $250,000 replacement for Hialeah's signature Flamingo Stakes that served as a springboard to the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) for the likes of Citation and Seattle Slew. Based upon the returns of the inaugural Aventura, run on April 6, none of the nine 3-year-olds are likely to follow that path.

Tampa Bay Derby Could Lure 10 Runners

A field of up to 10 is expected for the $200,000 Tampa Bay Derby, a grade III event for 3-year-olds set for March 17. Several horses are expected to ship across the state from Gulfstream Park on Florida's eastern coast.
