Bill Would Seek to Protect Kentucky Horse Buyers

A bill designed to protect horse buyers from being defrauded has been introduced in the Kentucky House of Representatives by Democratic Rep. Denver Butler of Louisville. The legislation has the backing of California vintner Jess Jackson, whose lawsuit against agents Emmanuel de Seroux and Brad Martin and trainer Bruce Headley alleged fraud in private and public auction purchases made on behalf of Jackson.

Strong demand for juveniles at public auction continued at the Barretts May Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training held May 17 at the Hinds Pavilion at Fairplex Park in Pomona, California. A total of 193 horses were reported sold for gross receipts of $7,663,700, an 8.6% jump over the same sale a year ago when 189 youngsters sold for a total of $7,053,000.

Azeri, Astra to be Sold as Part of Paulson Trust Settlement

Allen E. Paulson Living Trust's Horse of the Year candidate Azeri and multiple grade I winner Astra will be sold at public auction in 2003 as part of the remaining disperal of the trust's bloodstock. An out-of-court settlement to sell the trust's remaining bloodstock interests was reached Dec. 9 between co-trustees Michael Paulson and Dr. Nicholas Diaco.

Japanese newspaper Sankei Sports reported that the Japan Bloodstock Breeders' Association has purchased dual classic winner Tabasco Cat for stallion duty for $7 million and will stand the 9-year-old son of Storm Cat at the organization's Shizunai Stallion Station.
