McPeek's Victories to Benefit Equine Research

Trainer Kenny McPeek will make a donation of $50 for each of his wins in 2009 to Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, it was jointly announced Sept. 9 by McPeek and foundation president, Edward Bowen. The pledge is retroactive to July 1.

New Projects to Study Laminitis

Two projects focusing on the equine disease laminitis will be launched soon using funds raised by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association in memory of the late 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Barbaro. The projects, at more than $100,000, will be conducted by researchers at the University of Georgia and Louisiana State University.

Lexington Museum to Salute 'Trainers of the Bluegrass'

Following its popular 2006 exhibit featuring a dozen jockeys with close ties to the area, the Lexington History Museum salutes the "coaches" of the Thoroughbred industry. Opening April 9, the 2007 exhibit will feature famous race horse trainers either from the Bluegrass or whose careers have been made with significant success in the region.

Elastikon Award to Promote Soundness In Horses

A research project aimed at avoiding a common type of fracture in athletic horses has been designated the recipient of the first Elastikon Equine Research Award. The Elastikon Award is made possible by a grant from Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Company to the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

Booklet Races for Research on Triple Crown Trail

John Oxley, owner of 3-year-old stakes winner Booklet, has pledged a portion of future purses won by the colt to equine research. Booklet is scheduled to race next in the March 16 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.
