Elaine Klein, who had great success racing and breeding horses with her husband, Bertram, and son, Richard, died July 31 after a battle with cancer.
Iowa Oaks (gr. III) winner Uptown Bertie died Nov. 13 at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital due to complications from colic according to co-breeder and co-owner Richard Klein.
Uptown Bertie made the most of her first stakes appearance by winning the $200,000 Iowa Oaks (gr. III) for 3-year-old fillies June 30 at Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino.

Miss Linda and Forest Secrets, the top two betting choices in Friday's $100,000 Sabin Handicap (gr. III), finished one-two in the race for fillies and mares at Gulfstream Park. Miss Linda was sent off as a slight favorite at the windows, but the Argentine-bred was clearly the best on the track, expanding her lead in the stretch en route to a 4 1/4-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile race.
Miss Linda and Forest Secrets, both grade 1 winners last year, make their seasonal debuts at Gulfstream Park Friday when they head a field of 12 fillies and mares in the $100,000 Sabin Handicap (gr. III) at 1 1/16-miles.
Favored De Bertie pulled away from longshots Sara's Success and Lily's Affair in the final strides to win the $75,400 Escena Stakes on Friday at Gulfstream Park. Jockey Manuel Aguilar appeared to escape serious injury after he was thrown to the track on the first turn.
De Bertie, a two-time stakes winner over the Gulfstream Park strip last year, heads a field of 13 fillies and mares in Friday's $65,000 Escena Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. If all 13 go, the race will have a gross value of $75,400, with $45,240 to the winner.

The comeback victory by Richard, Elaine and Bert Klein's De Bertie in Tuesday's feature race probably earned the 4-year-old De Niro filly a spot in the gate for Churchill Downs' $250,000 Falls City Handicap (gr. III) for fillies and mares on Thanksgiving day.
De Bertie earned her second graded stakes win on the current Gulfstream Park meet, closing from last place to win Sunday's $200,000 Rampart Handicap (gr. II) by 2 1/2 lengths over favored Apple of Kent. In January at Gulfstream, the 4-year-old filly earned her first career stakes win in the Sabin Handicap (gr. III).
