Shine Again, Jerkens Hit 'Home Run' With 21-1 Ballerina Score

Though trainer Allen Jerkens may not like his "Giant Killer" nickname, the moniker is unlikely to go away as long as he keeps sending out high-priced winners in high-class races. Jerkens struck again Sunday when jockey Jean-Luc Samyn guided Shine Again through a gap along the rail at the top of the stretch and held off a late run from Country Hideaway to win Sunday's $250,000 Ballerina Handicap (gr. I) at Saratoga.

Belmont Racing Report: Apple of Kent Shines in Shuvee

In the classic film Roman Holiday, Audrey Hepburn portrays a modern day princess who both resists her stringent obligations and yearns for the pedestrian pleasures of everyday life. In an effort to personify the players atop New York's current group of stakes fillies and mares, and Apple of Kent who is poised to join them, you wouldn't be taking great liberty by invoking the image of Hepburn's demure but spirited character into their respective profiles.

Aqueduct Race Report: Country Hideaway Wins Bed O' Roses

Country Hideaway rallied from next-to-last in the seven-horse field and held off a resurgent Critical Eye to win the $157,700 Bed O' Roses Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) Saturday at Aqueduct. Under John Velazquez, the 5-year-old daughter of Seeking the Gold, out of the Pleasant Colony mare Our Country Place, stopped the timer after running a mile in 1:34.98 on a fast track.

Riboletta Romps in Ruffian

Riboletta ran off to a 7 1/2-length victory over Gourmet Girl to take the $250,000 Ruffian Handicap (gr. I) for fillies and mares for her fifth straight victory. Ridden by Chris McCarron, the 5-year-old bay mare pressed the early pace set by Lu Ravi and Country Hideaway, then moved to the front on the far turn before pulling away with ease through the stretch.
