Gulfstream Stables Calder Horses During Recovery

In its effort to aid in the rebuilding process at Calder Race Course, Gulfstream Park bedded down 50 Thoroughbreds Friday that made the six-mile trip east to Hallandale Beach.

Calder Race Course will not be open Oct. 24 due to a warning in effect for South Florida, which is expecting Hurricane Wilma to approach the southwest corner of the peninsula early Monday morning.

Redoubled Miss Takes Stage at Calder

Centaur Farms' homebred Redoubled Miss will defend her title against a field of six older fillies and mares in Saturday's $100,000 Stage Door Betty Handicap at Calder Race Course. The 6-year-old filly won last year's event by a nose over Grab Bag. She will break from the outside under jockey Eibar Coa, who has been aboard for her last three starts, including a victory in the Shocker T. Handicap, also at Calder. She placed third in the Stage Door Betty in 2002.

Tropical Park Derby: Ridin' into 2005

Newly-turned 3-year-olds get their first shot at graded glory right from the get-go Jan. 1 at Calder Race Course in the $100,000 Tropical Park Derby (gr. IIIT). A full field of 12 that includes four also-eligibles passed the entry box. The ones to beat are Exceptional Ride and Crown Point.

A Full Dozen Vie in Fred W. Hooper

A field of 12 has been drawn to face the starter Saturday in the 1 1/8-mile Fred W. Hooper Handicap (gr. III) at Calder Race Course. Headed by co-highweights A Huevo and Super Frolic, the race is the 12th on the "Grand Slam II" card featuring four stakes and $600,000 in purses.

Calder Increases Purses $1,000 Per Overnight

Horsemen at Calder will find a little something extra on their plates Thanksgiving Day. The track announced a purse increase of $1,000 per overnight race, which will take effect with the Nov. 25 race card.

Calder Veteran Abes Named New General Manager

Calder Race Course president Ken Dunn Monday announced the appointment of Michael D. Abes as vice president and general manager for the Thoroughbred track in Miami, Fla. Abes has been treasurer at Calder since 1991 and will retain that position when he assumes his new duties.

Saltzman to Retire as Calder Race Caller

Calder Race Course track announcer Phil Saltzman announced Saturday that 2004 will be the final year that he calls the races at the Miami track. Saltzman, 67, will retire from the Calder announcer's booth after calling the action there for 21 years.

Gulfstream Park officials said $150 million would be spent for a complete overhaul of the Hallandale Beach racetrack and Thoroughbred racing would be brought to a new Ocala facility if the Legislature changes the pari-mutuel laws allowing for more simulcast wagering.

Second World Record in One Day at Fasig-Tipton Calder Sale

For the second time Tuesday, a world-record price for a juvenile sold at public auction was set during the Fasig-Tipton selected 2-year-olds in training sale at Calder Race Course. The new world record price of $4.5 million was paid by Japanese owner Fusao Sekiguchi for a colt from the first crop sired by Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Fusaichi Pegasus, who was raced by Sekiguchi.

Good and Tough Filly is Good and Fast

A chestnut filly sired by grade II winner Good and Tough zipped an eighth of a mile in a quick 9 4/5 seconds as she posted the fastest time at the distance during Sunday's Under Tack show for Fasig-Tipton Florida selected sale of 2-year-olds in training that will be held at Calder Race Course on Feb. 24.

Pletcher Buys $425,000 Colt for Lewises at OBS Sale

Trainer Todd Pletcher bought the first horse he has ever purchased for Bob and Beverly Lewis at public auction today, going to $425,000 for a colt by Sir Cat out of the Red Ryder mare Limestone Landing at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s juvenile auction at Calder.
