Dave Vivian sent out Soldier's Dancer to win the Calder Derby (gr. IIIT) in 2007 and Christophe Clement won the 2008 edition with Sporting Art when the race was run in the spring, and those two veteran trainers will have the favorites in the Oct. 17 renewal of the $100,000 event.

Calder Launches Turf Million

Calder Race Course has announced a new event to be held April 26, the first Saturday of the 2008 season at Calder: the "Turf Million." Four turf stakes totaling $1.15 million will be contested over the grass, including the Calder Derby (gr. IIIT), whose purse has been doubled to $400,000. The Calder Derby will also be the first half of a new national wager, the "Calder Derby / Kentucky Derby Double."

Calico Bay Upsets Silk Ridge in the FSS; Wise Answer Romps

Left eight lengths behind leaving the gate in the $400,000 My Dear Girl division of the Florida Stallion Series, Calico Bay overtook prohibitive favorite Silk Ridge near the sixteenth pole en route to a four-length victory at Calder Race Course Oct. 13. In the Florida Stallion In Reality division for males, odds-on choice Wise Answer kicked away from the field leaving the quarter pole and rolled home by a whopping 10 lengths.
