The Factor, making his seasonal debut in the $200,000 San Carlos Stakes (gr. II) Feb. 25, started his 2012 campaign the same way he finished up last year, winning at seven furlongs on Santa Anita's main track.
When one sees a six-furlong work in 1:16 and a mile work in 1:43, the last trainer that comes to mind is Bob Baffert. But those were the respective works Feb. 22 for the Baffert-trained Derby hopefuls Fed Biz and Liaison.
Drill, who defeated American Act by a nose in the Feb. 19 San Vincente Stakes (gr. II), was a high-energy horse with a lot of potential even as a yearling.
