Jockey Russell Baze captured his 400th victory of the year Thursday, marking the ninth time he has reached that milestone. To put the achievement in perspective, no other rider has won 400 races more than three times in a career. Baze received a Special Eclipse Award after the fourth time he reached 400, in 1995.

Task Force Finds Emerald Downs Deaths Unrelated

After seven horses died in a 19-day period this spring at Emerald Downs, the racetrack opted to create a task force to evaluate the deaths, and to see if similar injuries could be prevented in the future. Detailed soil and track assessments, as well as input from industry members and groups, indicated the track itself is in good shape, and the injuries were unrelated.

Persianlux Survives Inquiry, Wins San Luis Obispo Handicap

Persianlux, the longest shot in the race at 27-1, led every step of the way and rolled to a five-length victory Saturday in the grade II, $200,000 San Luis Obispo Handicap at Santa Anita Park. Ridden by Tyler Baze at 113 pounds, Persianlux ran 1-1/2 miles on a firm turf course in 2:27.70 and paid $57.20, $22.20 and $10.60. It was the first graded stakes victory for Baze, winner of the 2000 Eclipse Award as the nation's outstanding apprentice jockey. The 18-year- old rider became the youngest jockey to win a graded stakes race at Santa Anita since Steve Cauthen, who was also 18, rode J.O. Tobin to victory in the 1978 Malibu Stakes.

Lexicon tracked Bay Runner through opening fractions of :21.94 and :44.26, before pulling away to a two-length win over Men's Exclusive in the $177,500 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. III) Saturday at Bay Meadows. Under jockey Russell Baze, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome S. Moss's 5-year-old homebred completed the six-furlong race in 1:09.19 on a fast track.
