TVG To Show Barretts Works

TVG will air the preview works from the Barretts Selected 2-year-olds sale from Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif. The show will air Feb. 28 for one hour beginning at 11:00 a.m. The sale will be held March 5.

In Excess Filly Tops Barretts Workouts

A half-sister to multiple California champion Cover Gal posted the fastest one furlong time of 10.1 seconds during Monday's training preview in preparation for the March 5 sale of selected 2-year-olds in training conducted by Barretts Equine Ltd.

Barretts Mixed Sale Concludes With Mixed Results

Canadian-bred Suborned was purchased $70,000 to Darby Dan Bloodstock to top the second and final session of the Barretts January mixed sale Wednesday in Southern California. The largest-ever January sale conducted by Barretts resulted in decreases in the gross, average, and median prices.

Stakes Winner Song Of The Moment Tops Barretts' First Session

Multiple stakes winner Song of the Moment sold for $72,000 to Sid and Jenny Craig on Tuesday to top the first session of the Barretts January mixed sale in Southern California. A 4-year-old daughter of River Special, Song of the Moment captured the Juan Gonzalez Memorial Stakes at Pleasanton and the restricted Solano County Juvenile Filly Stakes at Solano in 2000. In her only outing this year, she finished third in the restricted Survive Stakes at Santa Anita Park on Jan. 2.

Medication Policies for Juvenile Sales Tightened

Last year, for the first time, all sale companies that conduct major juvenile auctions in Florida, Kentucky, and California tested horses for drugs following pre-sale under tack shows. This year, two companies, Ocala Breeders' Sales (OBS) and Fasig-Tipton, are tightening their medication policies.

Keeneland January Sale Off to Strong Start

Keeneland's January horses of all ages sale got off to a solid start on Monday. The number sold, gross revenue, and average price all experienced big increases from last year's first session. The buy-back rate declined significantly. And the second-highest price in the auction's history was recorded when Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Desert Stormer (in foal to Kris S.) sold for $3.6 million.

Barretts Winter Sale Will Be Larger In 2002

Barretts' winter mixed sale will be slightly larger in 2002 than it was in 2001. The catalogue has 541 lots, an increase from the 532 that were listed earlier this year. The sale will be conducted Jan. 22 and 23 in Pomona, Calif.

Barretts Sale Up In Average, Median

A smaller catalogue led to a lower gross, but the major indicators were positive for Barretts at its October yearling sale. Held Oct. 2, the auction showed significant gains in average and median.

Geri Colt Tops Barretts Sale

Geri McGuire, a chestnut colt from the first crop of Geri, brought the top price of $215,000 on Tuesday at the Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training in Southern California. Ed and Natalie Friendly purchased Geri McGuire, who was consigned by the Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent.

After Stock Market Plunges, Business Declines At Barretts March Sale

One day after the stock market plunged dramatically, business at the Barretts Equine Ltd.'s March select sale of 2-year-olds in training suffered significant setbacks. Gross revenue dropped by 33.8%, and the average and median prices fell by 27.2% and 44.0%, respectively. The buy-back rate was 45.4%, reaching the second-highest level in the auction's history.

In Excess Filly Breaks Down At Barretts

Excessively Unique, a daughter of In Excess, was euthanized after breaking down Sunday during Sunday's preview show for Barretts Equine's 2-year-olds in training sale that will be held Tuesday at Fairplex Racetrack. The filly had just finished working an eighth of a mile in :10.6 and was galloping out in the first turn at Fairplex Park when she fractured her right foreleg. Her rider, Quarter Horse jockey Ralph Seville, was not injured.

Bertrando, Cherokee Run Colts Post Fast Times

Colts by Bertrando and Cherokee Run turned in the fastest workouts on March 5 at the under tack show for the Barretts March select sale of 2-year-olds in training in Southern California. The Bertrando colt, who is named Ashen, covered an eighth of a mile in :10.1, and the Cherokee Run colt breezed a quarter mile in :21.9.

Consignors Work to Improve Image of Auctions

Consignors of 2-year-olds in training banded together in Florida Aug. 24 and formed an organization designed to improve the image of juvenile auctions. In addition, they discussed various issues such as drug testing, the use of whips, and pre-sale workout formats.
