Barretts opens its 2009 selling season with a January mixed sale on the grounds of Fairplex Park in Southern California. The auction, which has more than 300 horses in its catalog, begins at 11 a.m. (PST) Jan. 26.
The four major U.S. sale companies - Barretts, Fasig-Tipton, Keeneland, and the Ocala Breeders' Sales - have issued a set of uniform policies that will govern medication, prohibited practices, riding crops, and horseshoes, effective with the Feb. 17 OBS selected sale of 2-year-olds in training.

Wildfires continued Oct. 23 to threaten homes and horse farms in Southern California, particularly in San Diego County. Scoop Vessels' Vessels Stallion Farm is among the facilities that have taken in evacuated people and horses, even while a new fire has broken out just east of the farm near Bonsall, Calif. Del Mar racetrack has taken in evacuees when the fires, and its barn area was full by Oct. 22, with 2,000 horses and livestock.

Despite surrounding property being ravaged by wildfires that have spread throughout Southern California, it was business as usual Monday, Oct. 22, at the Mabee family's Golden Eagle Farm in Ramona, near San Diego.
The number of horses sold, gross revenue, average price, and median price all dropped at the California yearling sale held Oct. 2 at Fairplex Park.
According to Barretts official Jerry McMahon, optimism in California's racing industry could boost the demand for sale yearlings.
It's not yet clear if the other companies that conduct select juvenile auctions are going to follow Fasig-Tipton's lead and have a one-day under-tack show next year.
Three of the most important select sales of 2-year-olds in training will be jammed into a three-week period next year unless auction officials change their minds on the schedules.
There are 318 yearlings in the catalog for the third annual California yearling sale, which will be held Oct. 2.
