With no major dispersals in the mix and working against an ailing economy, the two-day 2008 Barretts October mixed sale began Oct. 27 facing an uphill battle. The first day saw 143 horses sell for $536,600, yielding an average of $3,752 that was 69% last year's event.

Wildfires continued Oct. 23 to threaten homes and horse farms in Southern California, particularly in San Diego County. Scoop Vessels' Vessels Stallion Farm is among the facilities that have taken in evacuated people and horses, even while a new fire has broken out just east of the farm near Bonsall, Calif. Del Mar racetrack has taken in evacuees when the fires, and its barn area was full by Oct. 22, with 2,000 horses and livestock.

The Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training will be broadcast live on HorseRacing TV (HRTV). The auction, which has a catalog of 406 horses, is scheduled for Tuesday, May 15, beginning at 10:30 a.m. (PDT) and will also be streamed live at www.barretts.com.
