Baffert, Captain Steve Win Kentucky Cup

Shane Sellers put Captain Steve on the lead going into the stretch and held off Golden Missile to win the $500,000 Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II) on Saturday at Turfway Park. This was the third win in four races for Captain Steve, the only 3-year-old in the six-horse field. The victory gave trainer Bob Baffert three Kentucky Cup Classic winners in the past four years.

Sporting $8-million in capital improvements, New York's Saratoga Racecourse began its 2000 season Wednesday with 27,810 patrons, a record for a July opening at the upstate oval.

On the West Coast, Del Mar kicked off its seaside meet with a crowd of 31,494, third-largest in track history.

The California Horse Racing Board on Wednesday issued a complaint against three-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Bob Baffert after an independent laboratory confirmed that a split sample taken from one of his horses tested positive for morphine, an illegal Class I drug first detected by the board's official laboratory, Truesdail.

Captain Steve Wins Iowa Derby
