Flame Thrower, Street Cry Reprise Futurity Finish in Norfolk

Three weeks later and with an extra furlong to race, the results remain the same as Flame Thrower reprised his wire-to-wire performance from last month's Del Mar Futurity (gr. II) to win the one-mile $200,000 Norfolk Stakes (gr. II) by a neck over the late-charging Street Cry Saturday at Santa Anita. In the seven-furlong Futurity, Flame Thrower just lasted to best Street Cry by a head.

Kelly Kip, Others Work

Hobeau Farms' Kelly Kip put in a four-furlong drill over a sloppy Belmont Park strip Wednesday morning, his third work since returning to trainer Allen Jerkens' barn after recovering from his second hock infection in as many years. Also working Wednesday were Caffee Lattee, King Cugat, License Fee, and Purely Cozzene.

Baffert, Captain Steve Win Kentucky Cup

Shane Sellers put Captain Steve on the lead going into the stretch and held off Golden Missile to win the $500,000 Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II) on Saturday at Turfway Park. This was the third win in four races for Captain Steve, the only 3-year-old in the six-horse field. The victory gave trainer Bob Baffert three Kentucky Cup Classic winners in the past four years.

Saratoga, Del Mar Open to Large Crowds

Sporting $8-million in capital improvements, New York's Saratoga Racecourse began its 2000 season Wednesday with 27,810 patrons, a record for a July opening at the upstate oval.

On the West Coast, Del Mar kicked off its seaside meet with a crowd of 31,494, third-largest in track history.

Baffert Claims Contamination in Positive

The California Horse Racing Board on Wednesday issued a complaint against three-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Bob Baffert after an independent laboratory confirmed that a split sample taken from one of his horses tested positive for morphine, an illegal Class I drug first detected by the board's official laboratory, Truesdail.

Captain Steve Wins Iowa Derby

Trainer Bob Baffert and owner Mike Pegram took their show on the road to Prairie Meadows Monday evening, signing autographs and playing before an enthusiastic crowd. Their Captain Steve kept his end of the bargain, winning the $250,000 Iowa Derby at 1-5.
