Jockey Tyler Baze, in his first race since breaking the little finger on his left hand two weeks ago, guided heavily favored Carlsbad to a track-record victory in the Rancho Bernardo Handicap (gr. III) at Del Mar Sept. 4.
Impressive stakes winners Carlsbad and Evita Argentina head a field of nine fillies and mares going 6 1/2 furlongs in the $200,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (gr. III) on Sept.4 at Del Mar.
She has already beaten colts this season when she captured the San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita. Now Evita Argentina will try to become the first 3-year-old since Honeymoon in 1946 to beat older fillies and mares in the A Gleam Handicap (gr. II) on closing weekend at Hollywood Park.
The first four finishers in last month's Honest Lady Stakes will all have the unenviable task of trying to catch the speedy filly High Resolve in the $100,000 Las Flores Handicap (gr. III) at Santa Anita April 5.
Intangaroo was a little known 3-year-old filly with one lifetime win when she competed at Hollywood Park last winter. She returns to the Inglewood track for the A Gleam Invitational Handicap (gr. II) June 28 with two surprising grade I wins to her credit and trainer Gary Sherlock thinking about the Breeders' Cup Fillies & Mares Sprint (gr. I) at Santa Anita in October.
For all the concern about the condition of Santa Anita Park's Cushion Track surface, entries are strong, especially for the opening week's stakes races. A field of 14 is set for a wide open edition of the La Brea Stakes (gr. I) for 3-year-old fillies Dec. 29 at seven furlongs.
Silver Swallow, second to eventual Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner Rags to Riches in the Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I), will try to avenge a narrow loss to Railbird Stakes (gr. III) winner Ashley's Kitty when the pair meet in Sunday's $150,000 Hollywood Breeders' Cup Oaks (gr. II) at Hollywood Park.
