Cash is King Stable not only owned a racehorse that attracted the interest of the general public last year, but it actively contributed to a charity that garnered funds through the horse's success on the track. That special combination earned Cash is King Stable the 2005 Special Eclipse Award.
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association announced Monday that Cash is King Racing Stable -- owner of dual classic winner Afleet Alex -- has been honored with the Special Eclipse Award. The Special Eclipse is presented to "honor outstanding individual achievements in, or contributions to, the sport of Thoroughbred racing."
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association announced Wednesday that NBC Sports has won the Eclipse Award for National Television – Live Racing for its production of the 2005 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and has also won the Eclipse Award for National Television – Features for its segment on the people behind Afleet Alex during its 2005 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) telecast.
North American racetracks hosting lemonade stands on Belmont Stakes Day collectively raised more than $114,000 to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand For Pediatric Cancer Research, the charity founded by Alexandra "Alex" Scott in 2000.
Alex's Lemonade Stand will be raising money for childhood oncology at Thoroughbred Racing Association tracks across the nation June 11, as Afleet Alex seeks to follow up his dramatic Preakness Stakes (gr. I) victory with a win in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), the third jewel in the Visa Triple Crown.
The largest Preakness Stakes (gr. I) crowd in history helped Alex's Lemonade Stand raise $18,000 in donations at its two locations at Pimlico Race Course last Saturday. The Pennsylvania-based charity collected almost $11,000 earlier this month at the Kentucky Derby (gr. I).
The day before the 130th Preakness Stakes (gr. I), jockey Jeremy Rose said of Afleet Alex, "This horse will run over broken glass if I ask him to."
