Parker Scores 3,000th Victory at Mountaineer

DeShawn Parker, the winningest African-American jockey in Thoroughbred history, reached a career milestone the night of Aug. 17 when he scored the 3,000th victory of his career. Parker won the first race at Mountaineer Park, rallying Wildcat Cat to a narrow victory in a 4 1/2-furlong dash on the turf.

On that day, when the 40-year-old apprentice jockey captured her first win, Harris fulfilled a lifelong dream and shook off the weight of 20 years of struggle and hardship. She also became a part of horse racing's history as one of only a handful of winning female African-American jockeys and the first one at Hawthorne.

Retired Trainer Sylvia Bishop Dead

Sylvia Bishop, the first female African-American licensed to train Thoroughbreds in the U.S., died Dec. 27 in Ranson, W.Va., following a short illness.
