Third Director in a Month Leaves MEC

Anthony R. Campbell has resigned as a director of the board of Magna Entertainment Corp., the third director to leave the company in a month, and the second in the span of five days. In separate filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, company officials said they were engaged in discussions over potential "in-court or out-of-court" reorganizations.

Times Are Tough for Pinhookers

If the recent Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. (OBS) February select sale of 2-year-olds in training was any indication, it's going to be a tough year for yearling-to-juvenile pinhookers. The rate of return (ROR) on their investment, 30.7%, ranked among their worst ever based on figures that date back to 1990. It was the weakest since the ROR dropped to its lowest point during the 20-year period of 17.1% in 1993.

The 2009 Stimulus Act signed into law by President Barack Obama contains provisions that impact the horse industry, the American Horse Council said in a Feb. 24 memorandum to the industry.

Advances in Equine Drug Testing Revealed

The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, trainer Michael Matz, and owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson, have invited the public to attend a presentation by Dr. Lawrence R. Soma of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine's New Bolton Center and Dr. Scot Waterman of the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium.
