The board of directors of the High Hope Steeplechase has disqualified the winner Seignorial to last because he did not carry the assigned weight in The Blood-Horse Sportsman's Challenge.

Luzzi Named Venezia Award Winner

Mike Luzzi has been named the winner of the 2001 Mike Venezia Memorial Award by the New York Racing Association. The award honors riders who exemplify extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship, qualities exhibited by the jockey for whom the award is named. It is voted on by a ballot of racing fans, sports writers, and jockeys.

Bailey's Belmont Mount in Stronach's Hands

It looks as though Thunder Blitz' connections, trainer Joe Orseno and owner Frank Stronach, control the destiny of who rides not only their own horse in the Belmont Stakes, but Dr Greenfield as well. If Stronach, who will make the final decision, replaces Edgar Prado with Jerry Bailey for the mile and a half classic, then Prado will land the mount on Dr Greenfield. If he decides to stick with Prado, then Bailey will ride Dr Greenfield.

Rollin With Nolan Euthanized

Rollin With Nolan, a winner of five races and $241,194, was euthanized Friday after sustaining a leg injury in the Churchill Downs Handicap on the Kentucky Derby undercard. The 4-year-old son of Summer Squall won this year's Eillo Stakes at Gulfstream Park, his lone stakes win.

Loseth Wins Avelino Gomez Award

Veteran Hastings Park jockey Chris Loseth has been named the recipient of the 2001 Avelino Gomez Memorial Award. The award, sponsored by the Ontario Jockey Club, is given annually to a Canadian-born, Canadian-raised, or regular rider in the country for more than five years who has made significant contributions to the sport.

Keeneland July Yearling Sale Will Have Smallest Catalogue Ever

Keeneland's July yearling sale will have its smallest catalogue ever this year. Only 164 horses will be offered during the elite Kentucky auction, which has decreased in size for four consecutive years. The total represents a drop of 21.1% from 2000, when 208 horses were catalogued. In comparison, the decline in numbers between 1999 and 2000 was only 3.7%.

Gamely Boasts Quality Field

Tranquility Lake, never worse than second in seven tries over the Hollywood Park turf, heads a classy field of seven distaffers in Saturday's $250,000 Gamely Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. I) at nine furlongs. Owned by Mr. and Mrs. Marty Wygod, the Rahy mare captured the 1999 running of the Gamely by better than five lengths.

Nasdaq May Still Pull Youbet Listing

The Nasdaq stock exchange notified Youbet.com officials Tuesday that the company still fails to meet its minimum price requirement and is subject to being delisted. To remain on the exchange, Youbet.com stock needed to trade about $1 per share for 10 consecutive days before Monday.
