Foal Loss Syndrome Update: Count Exceeds 500

The third week of May in Central Kentucky was marked by cautious optimism, with the slowing of early fetal and late-term gestation loss, growing frustration among industry professionals, and much-needed rain. The Kentucky Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center has received more than 500 dead fetuses/foals this spring. Some veterinarians are predicting that the 2001 Kentucky foal crop could be reduced 5% to 10%, and the 2002 foal crop might drop 30% to 40% or more.

Kent Desormeaux made history at Tokyo Racecourse Sunday when he brought Lady Pastel from far back to post a neck win in a thrilling stretch drive of the filly classic Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks, Jpn-I). With the win, Desormeaux, who is only the second foreigner to ride in a classic race in Japan, became the first to win one.

Task Force Evaluating Horse Deaths at Emerald Downs

Emerald Downs has come under scrutiny because seven horses at the Seattle-area racetrack -- six during a two-week period from April 20-May 4 -- were euthanized. Though the number is lower than the historical average, a task force is evaluating the incidents in the hope of reducing the number of catastrophic injuries.

Youbet.com Strikes Deal With TVG; Stock Soars

Youbet.com has signed a deal that could give the Television Games Network a majority interest in the online horse racing and wagering service. Under the terms of the agreement, Youbet.com will pay TVG fees based on the handle. Youbet.com also has issued warrants allowing TVG to buy 19.9% of the online service's 19.4 million shares of common stock for 1 cent per share. Youbet.com's stock reacted strongly to the news. The stock, which closed at 75 cents per share Friday, jumped 101% to peak at $1.51 within the first hour of trading Monday.
